Iconic and yours to conquer, towering over Townsville city is the legendary Castle Hill. Arguably Townsville city’s most famous landmark, Castle Hill boasts a number of popular walking trails. In fact, they’re so popular that over 2,000 locals hike them every day. In addition to the endorphin rush, be rewarded for your efforts when you reach the top with striking views of Townsville in every direction.

Ah, you can almost feel the sea breeze. Townsville city’s beach foreshore is one of the best places to relax and unwind. Known as The Strand, here you can pair ocean breeze with palm trees, as you enjoy a leisurely stroll along the 2.5km walkway. Say hello to Townsville City’s oldest botanic gardens: Queens Gardens. Established back in 1870s and covering four hectares, spend an afternoon in Townsville City wandering amongst the roses, garden beds and rainforest plants. A perfect spot to bring the kids, Queens Garden in Townsville City is complete with two small hedge mazes and an aviary featuring many colourful Australian and international birds.

7. enjoy quick access to magnetic island

Okay, so Magnetic Island might not exactly be found ‘inside’ Townsville City… but with direct access from the centre of Townsville, how could we not include it in this list? Affectionately known as ‘Maggie’ by the locals, spend a day (or more) exploring the island’s secluded beaches, beautiful hikes, and stunning views. Perfect for wildlife spotting (hello rock wallabies and koalas!) and snorkelling the fringing Great Barrier Reef, Magnetic Island is so close to Townsville City, you could be disembarking on island time in as little as 20 minutes.
